Arthur Lake is the beating heart of Bhandardara — a magnificent horseshoe-shaped reservoir formed by the Wilson Dam across the Pravara River. Nestled at an elevation of approximately 700 metres in the Western Ghats, the lake is embraced on three sides by the dramatic ridgelines of the Sahyadri range, including the towering silhouette of Kalsubai, Maharashtra's highest peak, visible on clear days from the shoreline.
The lake was created in 1926 when the British colonial engineer Mr. Wilson oversaw the construction of one of India's earliest concrete gravity dams. What began as a utilitarian irrigation reservoir has transformed over the decades into one of Maharashtra's most cherished weekend escapes. The deep blue water reflects the surrounding hills like a mirror during the calm winter months, creating views that photographers and painters have sought for generations.
Bhandardara Resort Society sits directly on the Arthur Lake shoreline, making it the closest resort to the water's edge. Guests wake to the sound of water lapping at the banks and the calls of kingfishers and herons. The lake also hosts Maharashtra's celebrated Kajwa Mahotsav (Firefly Festival) in May and June, when thousands of synchronised fireflies illuminate the forested hillsides around the shore in a rare natural phenomenon unique to this ecosystem.
Boating on Arthur Lake is the defining activity of any Bhandardara visit. Hand-paddled and motorised boats are available from the resort jetty, offering either a gentle lake circuit or a longer journey to the far bank where Ratanwadi village can be reached by water — an experience unlike any road trip. Life jackets are provided and mandatory.
The lake's perimeter is ideal for cycling and early morning walks. The flat, scenic route hugging the southern shore passes through small orchards, wildflower meadows, and fishing hamlets. In the pre-dawn hours, the mist over the lake creates an ethereal atmosphere that is almost impossible to photograph badly. Birdwatchers will find the reed beds along the northern shore particularly rewarding — kingfishers, cormorants, painted storks, and in winter months migratory ducks all frequent the lake margins.
Camping beside the lake is available through the resort, with bonfire evenings, stargazing, and the incomparable experience of waking to a Sahyadri sunrise reflected across still water. During the monsoon, the lake fills to capacity and the Wilson Dam overflows, creating the spectacular Umbrella Falls at its northern end.
Arthur Lake is the resort itself — Bhandardara Resort Society sits on its banks. From Mumbai (185 km): take NH160 toward Igatpuri, then continue via Ghoti and Bhandardara. From Pune (175 km): take the Mumbai-Nashik Expressway, exit at Ghoti, then follow signs to Bhandardara. The resort is directly accessible on the Arthur Lake Road.
October to March is the ideal period for Arthur Lake visits. The post-monsoon months (October–November) see the lake at full capacity with lush green surrounds. December to February offers the clearest skies, best sunrise reflections, and most comfortable temperatures (15–22°C). April to May is popular for the Firefly Festival. July to September (monsoon) is dramatic but boating is restricted; Umbrella Falls is at its spectacular best.
