Randha Falls is the crown jewel of Bhandardara, a thunderous 170-foot (52-metre) cascade where the Pravara River drops into a dramatic gorge just 2 kilometres from our resort. Formed at the point where the Pravara exits the Wilson Dam reservoir and plunges over a black basalt escarpment, Randha is one of the highest and most voluminous waterfalls in Maharashtra. The name "Randha" is derived from a local Marathi word for a deep, hollow pit — a fitting description for the churning cauldron of white water that forms at its base during peak monsoon.
The falls were first formally documented during the British colonial period when engineers surveying the Pravara valley for the Wilson Dam project in the early 1900s recorded the natural cascade as a geographical landmark. The dam, completed in 1910, dramatically increased the monsoon volume that now feeds Randha, transforming what was once a seasonal trickle in lean years into an awe-inspiring torrent from July through October. At full flow, the roar can be heard from over a kilometre away, and a fine mist rises high enough to be felt on warm sunny afternoons even from the viewing platform.
What makes Randha truly unique among Maharashtra's waterfalls is its accessibility combined with its scale. Unlike most high waterfalls that require strenuous treks, Randha is reachable by road and offers a government-maintained viewpoint with safety railings, making it ideal for families, senior travellers, and photographers alike. The emerald pool at its base, partially visible from the upper viewpoint, draws adventurous swimmers when the current subsides in late October and November.
The main viewpoint, a concrete platform cantilevered above the gorge, delivers a full frontal view of the two-tier cascade. In peak monsoon (August), the falls billow outward in a veil so wide it almost appears as though the entire cliff face is in motion. Sunrise visits — around 6:00 to 6:30 AM — reward photographers with golden backlit mist and far fewer crowds; the light enters the gorge from the east and creates luminous rainbow arcs in the spray. Arrive before 8:00 AM on weekends to claim the prime foreground rocks for a clean composition with no guard rails in frame.
Below the main falls, a narrow footpath (passable October onwards when water levels drop) leads down to the rocky shore of the plunge pool. The jet-black Deccan basalt stones here are polished glass-smooth by centuries of river action and make for dramatic foreground elements in wide-angle shots. Look upstream on clear days for a framed view of the forested Sahyadri ridgeline above the falls — on particularly clear post-rain mornings, wisps of cloud cling to the ridge creating a layered landscape that feels almost cinematic.
From Bhandardara Resort Society, head south on the main resort access road toward the Bhandardara village junction (approx. 1 km). At the junction, turn left (east) onto the road signposted for Wilson Dam. Follow this road for approximately 1 km along the northern bank of Arthur Lake; Randha Falls is clearly signposted on the right. Total driving time is under 10 minutes. The falls are also walkable from the resort in about 20–25 minutes via the lakeshore path — ask our front desk for the scenic walking route that skirts the water's edge. Two-wheelers and cars can park at the small municipal lot adjacent to the viewpoint.
**July:** First strong flows post dam spillover; dramatic but often obscured by low cloud and heavy rain — carry waterproof gear.
**August:** Peak volume and peak drama; the falls are at their widest and most thunderous. Weekdays strongly recommended.
**September:** Slightly reduced flow but clearer skies and improved visibility; the best balance of power and photographic light.
**October:** Water levels begin to moderate; the plunge pool becomes accessible on foot; ideal for families with children.
**November:** Lean but still flowing; the gorge vegetation turns vivid gold and bronze — the most colourful month for landscape photography.
**December–June:** Falls are reduced to a trickle or dry entirely; not recommended as a primary destination.
